What Will This Bring?

Paulo’s at the Mansion

I overlooked Bonwich’s post over on stltoday.com, but it appears we have a new J&W grad gracing our city at what looks to be a steakhouse complete with a “Build Your Own Steak” section of the menu. This begs the question…

Does a high dollar culinary eduction make a good chef?

I recall a restaurant opening a few years ago that claimed their chef had worked at Daniel in NYC. That was all the information they gave you. Can you really draw much from that? Maybe they were the pot-washer. It’s so ambiguous you really just don’t know.

I’m not holding my breath, but let us know how this place is if you go.

Opening
One of those places that was a brief foothold for Richard Perry in the 1990s was the Mansion at Lakepointe, a restaurant in a striking Civil War-era mansion in O’Fallon, Ill. And just as Perry is embarking on a new place in Millstadt, the beautiful old building has been reborn as Paulo’s at the Mansion , with Johnson & Wales product Paulo Pacheco at the stove and David Kappert as a co-owner. The restaurant at 1680 Mansion Way, just west of the intersection of U.S. 50 and Illinois 158, is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Entrees are generally in the $15 to $28 range.
