Someone on Chowhound was asking for restaurant suggestions for their anniversary and I just wanted to throw this out there.
If you are planning a special meal, when you make the reservation at the restaurant, by all means tell them.
At worst, you’ll get exactly what you would have anyway. At best, a good restaurant will care. While you shouldn’t expect anything free unless you’re going someplace like the Olive Garden, you might get a more intimate table, a better view, a more attentive server, or who knows what else.
You’ll never know unless you mention it, and there’s a big difference between simply saying “it’s my wife and I’s fifth anniversary” and “can I get free pie?”
