Hertitage Breed Turkeys – Just $209

bourbonred“The best way to save the old time poultry is to return them to our dining tables.”

–Frank R. Reese Jr.

Ian beat me to it, but the New York Times article on Heritage turkeys really is worth mentioning again if you stumble in here instead of there.

I’d looked into obtaining a Heritage Breed turkey for our holiday festivities earlier in the year, and while I had no idea Frank Reese’s birds were considered to be the “best” at the time, it was the Heritage Foods USA site selling one of the five breeds his Good Shepherd Ranch raises that sent me quickly scurrying away from my quest.

If your family is anything like Ellie’s, or mine for that matter (and mine’s not that big) you’ll be needing a Turkey in the 20 pound realm which will set you back about $200 versus the $20 of a Honeysuckle White. But hey, shipping is included in that $200.

Anyway, I can say with certainty there won’t be any liberated turkeys on my Thanksgiving table this year. As I don’t personally do the dinner, I would hate to watch someone destroy a $200 piece of meat. I’d flip out for sure — though not as bad as if I ruined it.

If you find yourself a high roller this Thanksgiving (a) tell us where you bought your turkey and what breed it was (b) let us know if it was worth the money in flavor (not feel-good karma) and (c) maybe you can voyeuristically spot your bird on the webcam.

There also some neat old photos on the site that I assume might be from Norman Kardosh (the farmer mentioned in the article).

The thought of cooking a $200 bird is terrifying. Hell, I splurged on a $50 organic turkey from Whole Foods last year and spent the whole roasting time just barely not freaking out.

I’ll be making a turkey this year for the first time. Pretty sure I’m gonna fry that sucker in my brand new fryer…..

Now, where to buy this bird?

  3. Mac Says:

Well, I splurged and picked up a 14lb Honeysuckle ;-)

    $1.50/lb.

    Fresh, not frozen.

We’ll see how she works out.
