Organic Farming and Soil
November 20th, 2007
Here’s a very brief article that my Google Alerts picked up today talking about organic farm soil testing. Mostly I’m linking to it because they discuss crop rotation and cover crops — two topics Paul from Bellews Creek discussed earlier in the year at SLOWednesday.
I find the whole thing really fascinating, and while I never thought farmers were dumb-yokels in the first place, Paul really opened up my eyes to the pains organic farmers go through to ensure their soil is optimal.
When you get right down to it I suppose their soil is like gold for them, so it makes perfect sense.

Bill you need to read “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” by Michael Pollan. Not only is it a well written fascinating book but it has a whole section about organic and sustainable farming that is very eye opening.

I concur with Todd 100%. It’s something everyone concerned about food in any way should read. He also wrote a book called “The Botany of Desire” that is fascinating.

I will admit this only in a comment because few will see it, but I have both books. They are staring at me as I type this from my gastronomy bookshelf, but I have shamefully yet to read either.

bb,
You should read “An Omnivore’s Dilemma” as bad as I should go to Atlas.
