One More Thing About Plastic Bags

paperbagsI know this isn’t food related other than we need bags to take home our booty, but I recalled reading something previously about plastic bags actually taking less energy to recycle than paper bags.  Fleet Feet Sports, in fact, even has a statement on the sides of their plastic bags about their being easier on the environment to recycle — contrary to popular belief.

I thought it was pretty interesting information at the time, and as nobody ever believes me when I bring this up, I did a little scouring today and tracked down some of the info in this nice picture from the Washington Post.

Obviously the best thing is to not use the paper or plastic bags the store provides in the first place, but I thought you’d at least like to see a little hard information to back up my viewpoint that Whole Foods is doing it more for the image and bottom-line rather than the environmental aspects.

I have been on the canvas bag bandwagon for years now. If anyone cares: I just picked up a SUPER GREAT canvas bag from Restoration Hardware on Sunday for 10 buckaroos. Very thick and sturdy with leather handles, zipper pouch on the inside for your wallet/keys, and fully lined. i used it today and i carried 4 lbs of onions, 4 lbs of potatoes, 5 oranges, 2 pears, 1lb of cherries, dozen eggs and 2 marrow bones. That’s alot of food!
