Not So Happy Meat
Feb 4, 2008 sustainable agriculture
Let me just say I’m a realistic guy. I know that I eat meat like this in some of the restaurants I go to, and on occasion–though a lot less these days than before–I probably buy some of this meat for home consumption.
Also, I recognize that for the vast majority of Americans the cost of humanely raised meats is prohibitive, and Ellie and I are fortunate that our situation is such we can afford to make these choices.
So, if you can afford the expense of eating what I jokingly refer to as “happy meat” (thanks to an old coworker’s fiance), please do so. I think this is probably a lot more common than you’d like to think.

I like “happy meat.” An former coworker also referred to it as “union mean” because of their good benefits.

Bill, Thanks for posting this … though I didn’t really need it, it completely reaffirms my “buy meat only from farmers who I know are treating their animals humanely” stance … and yes, I’m lucky that I’m able to do it.
Some good news … the USDA shut down the slaughterhouse in question:
“On Feb. 4, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) suspended inspection at Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company based on the establishment’s clear violation of Federal regulations and the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. This Notice of Suspension is a regulatory course of action available when FSIS finds egregious violations of humane handling regulations.”
