Olga’s Kitchen to open in June at Chesterfield Mall
If you’re anything like me you’d think with a name like Olga’s this place will be serving some kind of Eastern European based food.
You, however, would be wrong as they are instead one of those places that tries to be everything to everyone by offering an odd mix of Greek, Asian, and greasy American flavors mostly in the form of sandwiches.
Personally it’s one of the worst names I’ve ever seen for a restaurant, and add to that their description of the Original Olga topped with Olgasauce, and even before we get to the fact it’s a chain, I’ll take a pass. I don’t want any of Olga’s Sauce.
Though in fairness…
- Olga bread appears to equal pita
- Olgasauce appears to equal tzatziki.
Why don’t they just say so?

When I read this post the name sounded really familiar to me and I started to remember some reviews I had previously read about greek restaurants in the area. There is apparently an Olga’s in the Fairview Heights, IL mall, and I have read several reviews saying even though it is in a mall it is actually not that bad. I don’t know if I believe it, but that was what I read.

There’s one in the Alton Square Mall (aka - Worst Mall Ever). Beth and I have been going there for years. Not fine dining by any stretch of the imagination, but I dig the Olga Bread!

So is it just pita?

It’s like a soft greek pita - but really buttery?

This reminds me of a scene from the Simpsons:
Helen: Hmm, Pita. Well, I don’t know about food from the Middle East. Isn’t that whole area a little iffy?
Hostess: Hey, I’m no geographer. You and I — why don’t we call it pocket bread, huh?
Maude: [reading the ingredients list] Umm, what’s tahini?
Hostess: Flavor sauce.
Edna: And falafel?
Hostess: Crunch patties.
Helen: So, we’d be selling foreign…
Hostess: Specialty foods. Here, try a Ben Franklin.

At the tender age of 8, I thought Olga’s Kitchen was God’s Gift to humanity. I remember eating there twice at the King of Prussia mall outside of Philly, on a shopping trip with my grandma. I really need to try it again, to see if it lives up to my outstanding memories. I remember the pita chip thingys were pretty good. Do they still exist?

I’m a St. Louis native but lived in Michigan for high school (where Olga’s began). I can’t explain the bread but it’s not like pita. It’s sweet and delicious and very addicting. When they toast it and serve it with a hard, white cheese spread, you can’t stop eating!

There used to be an Olga’s in a mall about 90 minutes away from where I lived in CA. We would drive there pretty much just to eat at Olga’s. I haven’t had Olga bread in years and I’m so happy to see that they are offering it for order online. The stuff is delicious. I just wish they’d get a restaurant a little closer to me in AZ.

Olga’s is great! I grew up in Michigan, and Olga’s originated in Birmingham, MI. An original Olga sandwich is wonderful. So what if it is a chain that tries to be “everything to everyone”? You should try the olga sauce and their pita bread! You don’t know what you are missing!!
