Thanks for putting another angle on Alton Brown. I generally like him although on Good Eats he's sometimes overly academic. A different glimpse of him was shown on a series where he wrote his motorcyle cross country. He stopped in a # of donut places in St. Louis - my home town.

Now living in Boston - they are dominated by the Dunkin' Donut factory. No greasy friend donuts here.

I too enjoyed the "hallway surfing" story and really appreciated his comments on organic vs. local/sustainable.

I noticed a bunch of links from an Alton Brown forum, and when I went to follow them to make sure they said I wasn't mean, I was reminded of another funny story Brown told.

Kristina said:

"When asked what his favorite dessert is, he said cake. . .like just plain birthday or wedding (funny stories here) cake. He then embarrassed himself by saying that often when he's done with the signings, it's very late and when he goes back to the hotel, the restaurant is closed and room service has shut down. Then he sometimes participates in an activity he calls "hallway surfing." Yes, really. He checks out what people have left behind "OH! half a pizza!" and decides upon its edibility. He said he once took the top tier of a wedding cake left behind to be thrown away. It even had the little bride and groom on top. He felt sort of bad about that part, so he took the bride and groom back and left it leaning up against their door. Riotous laughter ensued on that one. "
