Last Week at the Market - Ian Strikes
May 28th, 2008
Last weekend was Ellie’s birthday and celebrating it multiple times in a way that required sleeping in, I made it only to the Maplewood Farmers’ Market. And I was incredibly late to boot so I witnessed nothing new, personally.
I hear there was more kale and baby bok choy, and Beer” target=”_blank”>Ian bought the last strawberries from Biver Farms and seemingly enjoyed them with an export IPA from Schlafly.
Perhaps someone that hit the other markets, including the opening weekend at Clayton, will chime in with anything new they saw.
I’m curious if any more strawberries will have popped up, but I’m afraid all this rain may have slowed down this weeks crops.
Better luck this week.

TG Market was good. No strawberries there…they said next week. Heinkebein Hills had some might nice pork ribs and the breakfast sausage is a HUGE hit in our house. Prairie Grass Farms had lots of eggs despite the chick massacre. Don’t know if he’ll have them next year though. Lots of good lettuce, bok choy, asparagus….Greenwood was there and looked busy so that is great. Not a huge variety of green leafies but they were fresh and tasty. I only hit what I needed to…so there were some stand left unseen. This week I’m hitting up Clayton.

First and last broccoli rabe at Tower Grove.
Picked up bacon, a whole chicken, some andouille, ground lamb and lamb chops from Greenwood for a client….nice being able to pop a credit card, that way the cash can be spent on other things.
Word from Scharf’s at Soulard is that the cold and rain did not help strawberries ripen, the promised berries did not materialize. Thies’ road in west county was flooded. Time to build the ark.
Hopefully the rain will abait for today’s market….but Wed. has the rain curse. At least 25% of past market seasons Wed afternoon has rain, much of it hard driving windy rain. Sat morning, 4 times in 7 years. Go figure.

Theis farm in north STL County had strawberries last weekend. This weekend they have their strawberry festival where you can pick your own. They are not quite as flavorful as some years because of all of the rain in the last couple of weeks, but they still make a wonderful shortcake

The Collinsville strawberries rock! Much bigger and more flavor than the other locals. We’ll have to wait for this weekend to see if Living Springs Berries and Scharf’s are worth the wait.
