Prairie Grass Farms Beef…Yes, Beef

cow

Rumor has it that the Hillebrands have raised one grass-finished head of cattle which they will be selling this Saturday at Clayton Farmers’ Market.  Rumor also has it that they might be getting into beef next year which raises the question: will they only sell it at Clayton so as not to compete with Karlios Hinkebein?

I talked to Dave Hillebrand on Wednesday and he said that he and Barb are selling the beef at Clayton so they don’t compete with Karlios … and I can only assume that will continue to be the case if they continue to raise grass finished-cattle.

got a couple lbs of ground beef this morning. it was my first trip to clayton farmer’s market…and most likely my last. they are not to friendly out there.

Annie, I am at the Prairie Grass Farms booth each Saturday at Clayton and enjoy the crowd and vendors, I’m sorry to hear that you did not think we were friendly, come let me have a second chance. I know that we’re not Dave and Karlios…who can compete with that?
Now for the chicken rumor…something did get into our new batch of young hens (probably our young Anatolian sheperd GUARD DOGS) they were to start laying in late July so production will be WAY down in late July(around 200 eggs per day or around 120 dozen per week!!) and we had just sold 300 older hens because their production was down and we can’t afford to feed them at the cost of feed if they are not producing.

We also made our first foray to the Clayton Market for the Prarie Grass Beef. The beef we are looking forward to having tomorrow evening, but as for the market we thought it was really good. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience Annie. I think Sarah Vickers, the Market Master, is doing a great job. We bought cheese from Baetje Farms that was fabulous and some incredible Mandarin Orange ice cream from Blue Sky (mix it with some basil – YUM!). Both vendors were really friendly and dolling out the samples so we could try their products before buying them. There was a long line for the available strawberries and the first tomatoes with, I think, Live Springs Farm. Brett from Biver Farms was there so we bought more spring greens. While there may not have been as many vendors as Maplewood or Tower Grove, the selection was diverse, the quality was high and we found the peeps to be nice. We will definitely go back.

Barb…oh my…I was not referring to you! You and your husband are always pleasant to speak with! It was just some of the other vendors and a few of the patrons were just really pushy and rude. I had one lady actually shove me out of the way to buy lettuce. I was just patiently waiting to get some radishes and she actually pushed me. It was like a Seinfeld episode!

I usually get my eggs from you at Tower Grove, just thought I’d stop in on Clayton for the beef.

We had the beef last night and it was wonderful! Had a nice big burger on toasted bread from 222 bakery…I know it’s not a ‘real burger’ if it’s on bread…but I couldn’t resist.

Thanks for clarifying the egg rumor! There were a couple folks waiting patiently behind me on Sat and I didn’t want to hold up the line with chit chat. I don’t blame you for nixing the hens. Feed is amazingly high right now. God bless the puppies!

I went to Clayton FM for the first time on Saturday too … just for Prairie Grass’s beef … got two pounds!

While I was there, I also picked up some radishes from Silent Oak Farm, some green tomatoes and strawberries from Live Oaks, and some cheese from Baetje.

I have to agree with Kelly and Annie … the vendors were all incredibly friendly, and it was so nice to meet some from outside the Maplewood and TG markets … but some of the patrons were a bit … oh, I don’t know … not laid back, maybe a bit rude.

I was waiting in line to get my produce from Live Oaks and all I heard was, “Why don’t they hurry up?” “Why do we have to wait so long?” “I can’t believe there’s a line.”

I’m all for people supporting local producers, but I didn’t get the sense that that is why some people were there … I don’t know … I could be totally off base, but there was just a different feel from Tower Grove and Maplewood.
