Farrar Out Farms
Because it’s just too exciting to hold onto until next week, the big market news this week will surely be that Farrar Out Farm is now at Maplewood Farmers’ Market. A lot of fingers can be uncrossed now.
I spoke to owners Bryan and Christina Truemper briefly about how things were going and they seemed pretty pleased with the reaction to their arrival. They brought a small selection because they weren’t sure what they’d sell, and it sounds like they’ll be a permanent Maplewood fixture meaning there will be more in the coming weeks. They even had fresh (not frozen) chicken that were slaughtered that morning.
Apart from that they grow all kinds of vegetables but the more exciting things (to me anyway) are the animals they raise. Three you just don’t see that much locally: duck, heritage breed turkeys and rabbit.
Here’s the complete list of everything they do:
Vegetables:
- arugula
- asparagus
- beets
- broccoli
- brussels sprouts
- cabbage
- carrots
- cauliflower
- collards
- cucumber
- dry beans

- garlic
- green beans
- green onions
- hot peppers
- kale
- kohlrabi
- lettuce
- onions
- peas
- potatoes
- radishes
- salad greens
- salad mix
- spinach
- sweet corn
- sweet peppers
- swiss chard
- tomatoes
- summer squash
- winter-squash
- zucchini
Fruits:
- blackberries
- cantaloupes
- raspberries
- strawberries
Meats:

- duck
- geese
- rabbit

I always wondered, who has time to get to this market — it’s on a weekday and closes before many get home from work.

You’d be surprised. A lot of people are there. I get off at four which is why it’s easy for me personally to make it.

Thankfully, it’s very close to where I live, so I can stop by on the way home. It’s pretty fun to grab a beer and do some shopping.

Hello! I cut my lunch hour and leave work at 4:30 on Wednesdays so I can get to the Maplewood market, which I enjoy tremendously. I do wish it was open a bit later, but some of the farmers do have a long ride home.
Quite frankly it is the only farmer’s market that I can shop at, as I don’t shop on Saturdays for religious reasons.

4-7pm….I set it up to give the farmers a mid-week direct sell option. In the height of season most farmers had restaurant deliveries and being able to sell to customers that didn’t make Sat markets or needed additional food mid week made sense. It was much more low key than Clayton….no cooking demos, no prepared food, no fancy signs nor propaganda to speak of…..just happy hour in a brewery parking lot.
Bryan and Christina raise great chickens (well meat) and kids. Nice to finally meet their daughter.
