Last Week at the Market - Ivan
Last week, meaning June 11 at the markets, I forgot to mention that the Root Cellar had sugar snap peas.
For the real last week, however, as previously mentioned, I made it only to Maplewood as I was heading to Louisville for the weekend.
The big change was that Ivan (The Fig Man) Stoilov was there. The million dollar figs aren’t here yet, but he was selling some of his canned pepper relishes made with his mother’s recipes. Sara and Stephen Hale shared some with us on Monday and they were absolutely amazing–not hot at all they were wonderfully sweet with just a touch of picant to keep them interesting.
Also, I missed mentioning that along with Farrar, Ozark Forrest made their debut at Maplewood two weeks ago. They were the ones that had the carrots I’d previously mentioned at Clayton, and they had a beautiful pile of them at Maplewood as well. They’re incredibly hardcore organic (even though they’re not certified) and often have a lot of heirloom lettuces as well.
Claverach once again had red new potatoes but they seemed to have a lot more of them than the previous week. They also had a ton of pickling cucumbers.
The one thing I did get from Tower Grove (courtesy of Irene Wan picking them up for me) were sour cherries. They weren’t kidding around, they are damn sour!

Centennial will have more black raspberries today and a limited amount of BLUEBERRIES! First come, first serve and I know how to cut in line.

I made it. There were a few pints left when we got there even. There was quite a bit of stuff there this week, although I didn’t stay long enough to check everyone out.
BB, I would have stopped to say hi, but we were in a hurry and you were deep in conversation with the Farrar Farms guy. Who I saw had chicken livers. As soon as I have some time to cook, I am picking up some of those.

It was a nice market yesterday. got some delicious carrots and beets. Ate most of the carrots in the car as I was starving. Picked up some micro greens from claverach….the basil smelled so…summery. Funny you should mention chicken livers Dan. They are on our menu for this weekend….i love liver.
