Niche Taste Bar is, without question, the hippest thing that has ever opened in St. Louis.

I’m not sure I understand the concept but am willing to give it a try? Is this for the casual diner and Niche is more upscale?

What are the hours of operation?

I agree with bb. this is a cool, comfortable, hip little joint where you go, have a couple of fantastic cocktails and a small bite to eat. It’s probably not the place to have a 4 course meal, although the food is fantastic.
I look forward to seeing what Gerard does with this place!

I believe they plan on opening around 4 and serving until 12:30, possibly later on busy nights. Considering the late night food options in STL are slim this is pretty exciting.
The cocktails are really well done and relatively inexpensive given the care and quality of ingredients. Food is great as you would expect.
The space is tiny as anyone who had been to Veruca knows. Minimalist-hip: One long wooden table and a small side table make up the only seating other than the bar; Edison light bulbs over the bar, open grill/prep station; white subway tiles on the back wall, chalkboard hog diagram to the side.

Anybody get the octopus? Sounds awesome.

Mac, I ate it. We ate the entire $8 section of the menu, and it was great. It had a really nice texture the sort of began chewy before your teeth would puncture through. It was nice to see someone serve something other than baby octopus in St. Louis also. The best dish was the goat, however.

re: goat..That seems to be the consensus of what I’ve heard.
Any idea what kind of octopus it was? Never had it, but would love to try it.

A friend and I tried TASTE last Saturday evening, and it was one of those memorable dining experiences. We tried several items: egg w/ green sauce, almonds, housemade pickles, housemade charcuterie, spicy pork meatballs, roasted radish bruschetta, sliced tomatoes, red velvet cupcake, and dark chocolate pudding. We skipped the “off the menu” lamb balls when we learned they weren’t meatballs…they were testicles. Of course, we also had cocktails: Rye Summer, Lady Grey, Sao Paolo Sage, and Bittersweet Bellini. All excellent, great service, intimate atmosphere. I doubtr many made as big a “meal” of it as we did…several couples came and went while we gorged. We just couldn’t stop.

Taste is excellent! We had eggs, almonds, & olives, then radish bruschetta, spicy meatballs and 2 cheese plates, love the Sweet Grass dairy cheese. We got 2 desserts, the red velvet cupcake and the peach blueberry pie – both too good for words

Can one order desserts from the Niche dessert menu at Taste? I’ve been wanting to stop by Niche for dessert, but don’t want to take up a table as I’m sure there are people lined up who would be paying for a full meal.

I’ve gone to Niche for dessert alone, and they certainly don’t seem to mind. I just might suggest calling ahead to make sure that it won’t be an issue.

You’d be taking up a table in taste. though–which only seats about 16 people.

True, but I would expect the average revenue per table in Taste is much lower than in Niche. Also, order 2-3 desserts and a couple glasses of wine would likely approximate a couple have a couple drinks and something off the taste menu. I would feel that taking up a table in Niche (assuming others are waiting or I am taking up a reservation slot that would normally be filled by a table order a full meal)would be shafting the server and the restaurant a decent amount in lost tips and revenue.

Don’t shy away from the Octopus on the taste menu. The preparation is great, very moist and a great combination of flavors.
