From the Vault: Flaco’s Tacos

Flaco's Tacos LogoAlthough I’ve slacked a bit in recent years, for the meals outside of St. Louis, I have the vast majority of every restaurant menu I’ve ever eaten from over about the last 12 years.  Or at least that’s what I thought.  As it turns out, that must be a recent thing because I apparently used to keep them from St. Louis too.  Tonight’s find amongst a stack of assorted menus from the mid to late nineties, filed next to a two-year run of clipped Post Dispatch Patricia Corrigan reviews in which you can read again and again that quantity apparently trumps quality, I spotted the Holy Grail of shuttered St. Louis restaurant menus: Flaco’s Taco

Three shots at glory are yours, after the jump…

I miss this place so much. Every time I drive east on Lindell at the corner of Vanderventer, I think of the great fish burritos and cheap margaritas. over expansion killed this place.

I’ve been meaning to do that with a Tangerine menu. Ah, memories…

Tres Banderas, in the Kmart center on the NW corner of Manchester/Clarkson in Ellisville, beats Flaco’s hands down. Nothing there has ever been less than fantastic…and the tilapia tacos are over the top! On occasion, a special might even include Salvadoran Lasagna!

I have eaten in Tres Banderas and while I won’t say their fish tacos are better than Flaco’s were, I will say they’re very good and worth checking out for anyone out that way. They sometimes have pozole which was good when I had it also.

And for those of you thinking, “why the hell would I go all the way to Ellisville for a fish taco?” You’ll go all the way to Lukas Liquors and then you’ll make the trip worthwhile by eating at Tres Banderas. It’s in the same plaza.

Pollo Asado Burrito with skull & cross bones sauce baby! I loved flacos. I’ve searched high & low for someone to give up a recipe or two. There’s gotta be someone out there willing to give up the goods.
