Chuck-A-Burger Trying to Hang On

STILL CRUISIN’: The owners of Chuck-A-Burger in St. John are hoping to close on a deal to sell their property that will help guarantee the restaurant, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary, will be around for a while. Owner Ron Stille, who bought the popular burger drive-in from his father Ralph Stille in 1995, said Thursday that he hopes to have the deal done within 30 days. The restaurant at 9025 St. Charles Rock Road was slated to close Dec. 31, but the lease was extended for five months while Stille negotiates the purchase. Stille has another Chuck-A-Burger in St. Charles that he opened two years ago. The restaurants are known for their “cruise nights,” when they play ’50s and ’60s music, have carhops and classic car enthusiasts parade around the grounds. At the peak of the company’s popularity in the 1960s there were eight Chuck-A-Burgers in the St. Louis area.
