Mark your calendars, this year’s SLOWednesday events start just two weeks from tomorrow, and the first is sure to be a hit…
May 13, 2009: Terra Madre Update
Intended to foster discussion and introduce innovative concepts in the field of food, gastronomy, globalization, and economics, Terra Madre is a bi-annual conference hosted by Slow Food international in Torino, Italy.
The last event was held in October of 2008, and Slow Food St. Louis sent three major delegates to represent them: Gerard Craft of Niche Restaurant, Dave Hillebrand of Prairie Grass Farms, and Brett Palmier of Biver farms. Enjoy this opportunity to offer them a belated welcome home and an ear to listen to their stories.
- SLOWednesday events take place at the Bottleworks in the Crown Room after the Farmers’ Market, at 7:00 p.m. Talks begin at 7:30 p.m., and Schlafly asks that everyone interested in ordering food and drink place their orders and be settled in before that time. Events are free and open to the public.

Lambstravaganza
Jun 9, 2008 chefs, farming, missouri
practically duplicating my slowfoodstl.org post…
It was a long day of oppressive heat and ferocious winds that have left me too drained to really comment at the moment, but in the end the food was great, the hospitality was incredible, and we all walked away convinced that the Hillebrand’s live on one of the most beautiful places on earth.
So a personal thanks to Barb and Dave Hillebrand and their family, chef Tim Grandinetti for helping out once again, and all the chefs he enlisted including Lou Rook III, Dave Owens, Margaret Kelly, Kevin Nashan, Christy Augustine, and all their staff that tagged along to sweat in Grandma Hillebrand’s garage.
I took over 500 pictures (of questionable quality) so I had to put them on my own site rather than Slow Foods, but they are now uploaded for your viewing pleasure.
Last Week at the Market – Tons of Stuff!!!
Jun 4, 2008 Illinois, St. Louis, farmers' markets, missouri
Wednesday
This week at Maplewood Farmers’ Market I made it in time to be one of those people that swept the Our Garden strawberries out from everyone. As I approached the booth there were ten pints and by the time I left the booth there was one. Two were mine! They were rather small and a bit tart but still better than any others I’d had to this point.
A bunch of new lettuces cropped up this week from Centennial Farms including magenta, butter crunch, and Nevada summer crisp.
Claverach added turnips, spring onions and cucumbers.
Root Cellar also had arugula which I don’t recall seeing last week. It was amazingly clean too. Generally Claverach takes the prize for cleanest vegetables which is a huge bonus when buying from them. They are outright obsessive about cleaning their lettuces especially which I’m sure goes a long way towards restaurants fighting over them.
Ken Muno (Goatsbeard) had his Camembert wheels which I can never remember what he calls after the fact. (Prairie Bloom maybe?)

Prairie Grass Farms Beef…Yes, Beef
May 30, 2008 farmers' markets, farming, missouri, sustainable agriculture

Rumor has it that the Hillebrands have raised one grass-finished head of cattle which they will be selling this Saturday at Clayton Farmers’ Market. Rumor also has it that they might be getting into beef next year which raises the question: will they only sell it at Clayton so as not to compete with Karlios Hinkebein?
Event: Slow Food Lambstravaganza
May 29, 2008 St. Louis, events, missouri, slow food

I’m robbing the Slow Food St. Louis description because, well, I wrote it. It’s coming up quick, and it’s sure to sell out so you might want to move quick. In the stories from previous years I’ve heard words like “kidneys” and “lamb sweet breads” meaning my words are simply: “hell yeah!”
Lambstravaganza – A dinner to benefit Slow Food St. Louis
Lambstravaganza is a multi-course dinner generously prepared for the third year running by Chef Tim Grandinetti. This year he has also enlisted additional help and will bring with him three more of St. Louis best chefs: Lou Rook III (Annie Gunn’s), Dave Owens and Margaret Kelly (Bissinger’s Chocolate), and Kevin Nashan (Sidney Street Cafe). The family-style meal will feature grass-fed lamb and free-range eggs produced by our Prairie Grass Farms hosts, Dave and Barb Hillebrand, as well as other Missouri products. Wine pairings will be provided with each course by Les Bourgeois and beer will also be provided by Schlafly.Prior to dinner Dave Hillebrrand will give a walking tour of the farm for those interested.

Last Week at the Market
May 14, 2008 St. Louis, farmers' markets, missouri
As expected the Farmers’ Markets last week were meat and plant heavy and vegetable light.
At the Maplewood Farmers’ Market (thankfully under the patio tent because of the rain) it was the relatively slim pickings you would expect on opening day. The Root Cellar from Columbia had the most produce including a bit of asparagus that went really quick. Mostly, however, they had various herbs and greens including what I can only assume is the weed of leafy greens: chard. Someone with a better green thumb than I can chime in but it seems like chard is available pretty much the entire growing season.
Also at Maplewood
