Event: Organic Gardening Club

mo_organic_assoc.gif

In the past I’ve put off home-gardening because I’d hoped to move soon and didn’t want the mess in my backyard. But, with the economy what it is, I’m not going anywhere soon. So perhaps you, like I, plan to make gardening a part of your new year. And if you’re really like me, you’re better at killing things then growing them so the inaugural meeting of the Missouri Organic Association’s Organic Garden Club might just be for you.

The cost is $5 and the event will be held Thursday, January 8 at the Town & Country location of Whole Foods from 6:30-8:00 PM. Friend of Slow Food St. Louis Molly Rockamann of EarthDance Farms will be there to speak and answer questions as well as show EarthDance’s short-film, Connoisseur of Fine Foods, about Mueller Organic Farms in Ferguson, MO. You can catch a teaser of the film on YouTube.

Further details and registration information can be found online at WholeFoodsMarket.com.

Fast Food V. Slow Food

There is a bar called Maryland House @ Brennan’s in the Central West End. I have never been there and honestly had no idea what it was until the owner of Pi, Chris Sommers, told me about a little something they do the first Wednesday of every month (that’s tonight). On that day (tonight I say) is Brennan’s Arguments and Grievances which is, in their own words, “a monthly event wherein the good citizens of St. Louis can stand up for the causes that matter least and, with their masterful oratory, command the minds and mirth of the crowd to decide the fate of such long standing and ridiculous feuds.”

Specifically Sommers told me about it because he was to be one of the opponents in Harley V. Vespa which you can catch online.

Specifically I tell you about it because (a) I’ve yet to make it and it sounds like a hell of a good time (especially if you could see a showdown like Jaws V. Jurassic Park) and (b) because the undercard tonight is a topic that doesn’t matter least to me, it’s Fast Food V. Slow Food with Sauce’s own April Seager taking the Slow roll of Carla Petrini.

Lambstravaganza

Array

practically duplicating my slowfoodstl.org post…

It was a long day of oppressive heat and ferocious winds that have left me too drained to really comment at the moment, but in the end the food was great, the hospitality was incredible, and we all walked away convinced that the Hillebrand’s live on one of the most beautiful places on earth.

So a personal thanks to Barb and Dave Hillebrand and their family, chef Tim Grandinetti for helping out once again, and all the chefs he enlisted including Lou Rook III, Dave Owens, Margaret Kelly, Kevin Nashan, Christy Augustine, and all their staff that tagged along to sweat in Grandma Hillebrand’s garage.

I took over 500 pictures (of questionable quality) so I had to put them on my own site rather than Slow Foods, but they are now uploaded for your viewing pleasure.

Event: Slow Food Lambstravaganza

Lambstravaganza

I’m robbing the Slow Food St. Louis description because, well, I wrote it.  It’s coming up quick, and it’s sure to sell out so you might want to move quick.  In the stories from previous years I’ve heard words like “kidneys” and “lamb sweet breads” meaning my words are simply: “hell yeah!”

Lambstravaganza - A dinner to benefit Slow Food St. Louis

Lambstravaganza is a multi-course dinner generously prepared for the third year running by Chef Tim Grandinetti. This year he has also enlisted additional help and will bring with him three more of St. Louis best chefs: Lou Rook III (Annie Gunn’s), Dave Owens and Margaret Kelly (Bissinger’s Chocolate), and Kevin Nashan (Sidney Street Cafe). The family-style meal will feature grass-fed lamb and free-range eggs produced by our Prairie Grass Farms hosts, Dave and Barb Hillebrand, as well as other Missouri products. Wine pairings will be provided with each course by Les Bourgeois and beer will also be provided by Schlafly.Prior to dinner Dave Hillebrrand will give a walking tour of the farm for those interested.

St. Louis Earth Day Festival

stlearth

Free and open to the public the 19th Annual St. Louis Earth Day Festival is happening this Sunday April 20, 2008. The theme of the event is In Your Own Back Yard and “highlights local initiatives and practical environmental advice that can be implemented in communities throughout our region.”

Among the food related happenings, Slow Food St. Louis will be manning a booth, and “the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market will be on hand to welcome spring with area growers offering a variety of produce, herbs, plants and other goodies.”

So come on out and don’t forget the actual Earth Day on April 22.

Food Trivia

You didn’t know this, but you totally want to sign up for the Slow Food Trivia Night on Saturday March 22nd so that you can wow all your friends with your superior food smarts.

Questionable Foods

Unable to be a ringer on your Convivial Pursuit team, I and a few others are heading over to Mike’s house Saturday to act as guinnea pigs for a test run of the questions.

Kimberly Henricks — Slow Food Member, blogger, and I think friend of Cupcake Grand Champion Stef has vowed to make The Cupcake Projects Beer Cheese Cupcakes with Bacon Cheddar Cream Cheese Frosting.

beer+cheese

I am terrified at the prospect of eating a sugary, cheesy cupcake topped with bacon, but at the same time it will be a part of this weeks personal food challenge.

Namely, which will I enjoy more?

  1. Joshua Galliano’s offal tasting at An American Place including common offal like tripe and not so common offal like the duck testicles (which they say has a texture like sausage).
  2. The Bacon Cheese Cupcakes

We will see.

New Slow Food St. Louis Website

sfstlsnailSorry for the lack of updated content, but I’ve been working diligently to put together a new Slow Food St. Louis Website.

It’s coming along nicely, and if you were interested in what we’re up to, know that you can now go find out.

We’re open to any critiques you might have, but go easy on me for now as the site is still within it’s first twenty-four hours. In other words, there’s still lots to do.

Also, to save you a bit of clicking, our next big event, Convivial Pursuit, is coming up fast, so buy some tickets and test your food trivia skills.
